One of the Absa Premiership’s classy attacking midfielders from the 2000’s was Lerato Chabangu. Known as “All You Need Is Love,” Chabangu played his best football for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana.
The Tembisa-born forward earned over 190 PSL appearances and over 30 Bafana Bafana caps. Running alongside some of the best footballers the land has ever produced, it should not be simple to pick your best eleven. It is therefore not a major shock to see Chabangu omitting serious talent such as Teko Modise, Daine Klate, Surprise Moriri, Brent Carlese, Josta Dladla, Katlego Mphela and Steven Pienaar from his dream team below...
Choosing a 4-4-2 system, Chabangu shared a group of the best ever players he has shared the dressing with via Kick Off.
⭐️ Calvin Marlin - Goalkeeper
Marlin began his football at Ajax Cape Town before earning his career highs at places like Mamelodi Sundowns while maintaining a prolonged Bafana career.
⭐️ Nasief Morris - Right back
The once Santos central defender is one of few SA players who earned a respectable reputation in the notoriously tough Greek League with Panathinaikos. One of Bafana’s greatest ever central defenders.
⭐️ Michael Manzini - Central defender
Talk about a one-team man. Manzini played his entire career at Mamelodi Sundowns with over 270 games.
⭐️ Mbulelo Mabizela - Central defender
Way before world football fully embraced ball-playing central defenders, “Old John” Mabizela was playing out of defense to drive his nervous coaches mad. The former Pirates & Sundowns talent scored one of the best ever Premier League goals on his debut for Tottenham Hotspur.
⭐️ Tshepo Masilela - Left back
The legendary left-back played his best football in the UEFA Champions League with Maccabi Haifa, Getafe in Laliga and of course Bafana Bafana.
⭐️ Esrom Nyandoro - Central midfielder
Before Sundowns had a bullet-scoring defensive midfielder, they had Esrom Nyandoro. One of Sundowns’ best-ever captains who still works at the club in an administrative role.
⭐️ Jorge Acuna - Central midfielder
Sundowns and South American exports come a long way back. It all started with the Chilien midfield Dynamo Acuna.
⭐️ Gift Leremi - Right midfieder
The late Leremi may have left Orlando Pirates to join rivals Sundowns but was so, so good Bucs fans hardly expressed any hate. Widely describes with speed, power and two-footed shooting.
⭐️ Siaka Tiene - Left midfielder
The Ivorian was hugely similar to Leremi, except he was left-sided and a superior crosser of a football.
⭐️ Sibusiso Zuma - Striker
Known as “Rhee,” Zuma left Mzansi very early on his career to create legendary status at Denmark’s FC Copenhagen and an evergreen for Bafana.
⭐️ Siyabonga Nomvete - Striker
One of the all-time greats in SA. “Bhele” earned over 80 Bafana caps in a career that included Serie A & Danish clubs. November retired last year before reversing the decision to join lower division side Uthongathi last month at 42 years of age.
Meanwhile, the now 34-year-old Chabangu is playing in the ABC Motsepe League with Baberwa FC.
