After the 4-0 thrashing at the start of this season, Manchester United is now trying to beat Chelsea to the signing of Lyon striker Moussa Dembele this January, according to a report.
Lyon is firm on their stance, however, that Dembele won’t be allowed to leave until the summer, despite the interest from Premier League sides.
Why Dembele is needed…
Chelsea is in need of bolstering their forward line because of the uncertainty surrounding Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi’s futures.
But United is now on the hunt for some much-needed firepower after it was revealed that Marcus Rashford would be out of action for at least six weeks with a back injury.
"Moussa will not leave, he wants to stay and win something with Lyon,” club president Jean-Michel Aulas said.
But according to FootMercato in France, United will try their luck in trying to sign Dembele, who is keen on a move back to England.
United scouts watched Dembele at the weekend against Nantes in Ligue 1, and now they’re sure they went to pursue a deal for the Frenchman.
FootMercato adds that United will look to make a bid of around £45million this month in order to lure Dembele away from Lyon.
Lyon is also in the midst of signing forwards Karl Toko-Ekambi and Tino Kadewere, which may mean that their reluctance to let Dembele leave increases.
The 23-year-old has notched 11 goals for Lyon this season and will add some much-needed depth to both Chelsea and United’s front line.
