One of football's most iconic figures turned 79 yesterday and we've dug around for some facts on the great man.

For instance, did you know that 19 November is Pelé Day by old club Santos? It's true. Pelé scored his 1000th goal on 19 November 1969 and the club declared that 19 November would be a commemorated forever. It's coming up!

💡 He’s named after Thomas Edison

Pelé was named after the inventor of the lightbulb. The young Edson “Pelé” Arantes do Nascimento has certainly illuminated plenty of football pitches and history books down the years. But what about the name Pelé? He got his nickname after his mispronunciation of the name of the Brazilian goalkeeper, Bilé, as Pelé. Classmates at school started him calling that and the name stuck.

😳 Pelé scored four goals on his senior debut debut

Pelé signed for Santos at the tender age of 15 and repaid the scout's faith with four goals on his debut against Corinthians. He went on to score 92 hat-tricks in his career and four-goal hauls on 31 occasions.

João Ramos do Nascimento, also known as Dondinho, once scored five headed goals in a match but his playing career was cut shoer by a bad injury.
