DR Congo giants TP Mazembe has been eliminated from the CECAFA Kagame Cup after going down 2-1 to Azam FC in a quarterfinal clash staged at the Stade de Kigali on Tuesday.
Defending champions Azam had to come from a goal down in the tie after Ipamy Giovani had given Mazembe a 22nd-minute lead.
Joining Azam in the semis were Ugandan champions KCCA who bundled out hosts Rayon Sports with the same margin.
Moustapha Kizza put the Ugandan side ahead with a good goal in the 34th minute before Rayon Sports defender Rugwiro Herve equalized for the Blues in the 48th minute.
KCCA snatched the winner in the 66th minute scored by Jackson Nunda and despite efforts from Rayon Sports who attacked hard and wasted several opportunities in the dying minutes of the game.
The action continues on Wednesday where Kenyan remaining Representative Gor Mahia will be up against Zambian Green Eagles with the competition three-time champions APR FC facing debutants AS Maniema in another Wednesday’s quarter-final
The winner of the annual tournament stands to pocket $30,000 in prize money while runners up will receive $20,000 and $10,000 respectively.
