Player Profile: Premier League’s top tackler Wilfred Ndidi

06 Jun 2019, 16:50

Futaa’s much-loved player profile continues with Nigeria and the Premier League’s number tackler Wilfred Onyinye Ndidi.

A  Premier League tackle King?

Soon after being confirmed as England's number tackling midfielder, the Nigerian star topped it up by emerging as Europe's number one ball-winner...

Player bio 📕

  • Age: 22
  • Club: Leicester City (England)
  • Position: Defensive midfielder
  • Nationality: Nigerian
  • Estimated transfer value: £31.50m

Early career ⚽️

The Ikeja Cantonment was where it all started. Ndidi was a junior Army officer...and daily they fed only on Agoyi Ewa (Beans paste) and Agege bread. The earliest football steps was with the Nath Boys, a kind of football academy at Police College Ikeja Lagos. Ndidi revealed that he was the only one of 500 boys spotted at a football tournament in Nigeria; watched by some foreign scouts. He was then invited for a trial at Belgium’s KRC Genk.

In 2015, Ndidi signed to Genk with the transfer fee of €180 thousand. Soon the Nigerian star completed a £17 million move to Leicester City to replace N'golo Kante’s big shoes in January 2017.

Style & strengths 💪🏻

Ndidi is a ball-winner. His ball-retaining skills are supreme and his tackles superb – most of them are clean and perfectly timed, and very similar to Kante, he enjoys running all the time.

Unlike Kante, Ndidi is tall at 6ft 1in. He is extremely good in the air, which makes him a great asset from set pieces in both penalty areas.

Weaknesses 🔎

Ndidi's still learning the ropes when it comes to offensive threat and passing precision, which is understandable given that he is 22 and started out as a defender.

A Super Eagle 🦅 🇳🇬

The 22-year-old is no stranger to the heavy and famous green shirt. The Lagos-born footballer already has 25 caps, including three FIFA World Cup games in Russia. Ndidi will surely be key towards Nigeria's AFCON 2019 dreams.
