A potential title-decider descends on Munich as Bayern’s 1-1 slip-up against Freiburg last weekend makes this 100th top-flight ‘Der Klassiker’ against back-on-top Borussia Dortmund a must-win. However, with each of the last four Bundesliga H2Hs featuring over 3.5 goals, don’t expect a cagey affair.
To say that this is a decisive title-defining clash is an understatement. Three of Bayern’s last four league fixtures have featured an opener within five minutes, and they've won the last seven matches on their home match, five of those to nil. Something has to give.
Team news & men to watch 🌟
Manuel Neuer and David Alaba could both recover from injuries in time to start. Niklas Süle, Mats Hummels and Jérôme Boateng compete for two spots at centre-back. Javi Martínez might come in as a more defensive-minded option in central midfield, with two of James Rodríguez, Thomas Müller and Leon Goretzka possibly forced to settle for spots on the bench.
For the visitors, Raphael Guerreiro could fill in at left-back, with Achraf Hakimi injured. Julian Weigl provides a further option at the back or in defensive midfield. Mario Götze challenges Paco Alcácer for the spot up front, although he could also start behind the Spaniard, if manager Lucien Favre decides to switch to a 4-1-4-1 again, with Axel Witsel playing as a lone defensive midfielder. Chelsea-bound American star Christian Pulisic is still out.
With 13 Bundesliga Klassiker goals, just one more for Robert Lewandowski will see him equal Gerd Müller’s record. Dortmund superstar and legend Marco Reus has 15 goals this season in the Bundesliga, underlining his importance to the team, he netted a brace in the 3-2 win earlier this season against the same opponents. Watch out too for talented teenage Englishman Jadon Sancho.
