Week 16 of the Kenya Premier League was one the low scoring weekends, only 10 goals were scored in eight matches played.
Nine teams failed to get a goal and three matches ended goalless. The first goalless draw of the weekend came on Saturday at Thika Stadium where Sofapaka FC and Thika United clashed. The draw beocmes the sixth straight one for Coach Nicholas Muyoti. He lost the first two matches after taking over from James Nandwa and his first points as the head coach came against Gor Mahia. Since then he has not tasted defeat even though he is in search of the first three points.
Eight without a loss
Kakamega Homeboyz extended their unbeaten run to eight matches in a row after holding Kariobangi Sharks. Only six points separates coach Mike Mururi's charges and leaders Ulinzi Stars. For Sharks its seven matches in a row without a loss and win in the tie would have seen them tie points with Tusker FC and Gor Mahia Fc.
The final goalless draw of the weekend came at Ruaraka grounds. Bottom placed Mathare United failed to break visiting SoNy Sugar's defence. The Slum Boyz have not scored in the last three matches and they have also not conceded. It’s now 720 minutes since Francis Kimanzi charges last won a match and 285 minutes since they last netted a goal.
New record for Ingwe!
AFC Leopards traveled back from Mombasa with three points. A late goal by youngster Marcelus Ingotsi saw the side end a 10 match unbeaten. It was a perfect start for Robert Matano as the side also managed to score after 454 minutes of wait . Leopards have finally won the third match away from home this season. Last season they won just two matches in the entire campaign, their tally is now five wins on the road in one and half season. Aziz Okaka and Alexis Kitenge made their KPL appearance in the tie. The win is important for the Big Cats as they will be facing a tough opposition in the final first leg tie.
Leopards next league opponents Western Stima shocked defending Champions Tusker FC. Villa Orachaman scored the only goal as the Powermen ended a five year wait for a win against Tusker. It was Stima second win over the Brewers in 15 meetings. The win is now the third one Henry Omino who picked 10 wins, 11 draws and just six losses last season.
A win for Tusker FC would have seen them move to 31 points but they have dropped to fourth with 28 points. George Nsimbe’s charges have lost the last two matches by a solitary goal. Their last win was a 1-0 over AFC Leopards.
Two red cards could not stop Posta Rangers from ending a six match winless run. The Mailmen lost Luke Ochieng and keeper Patrick Matasi. Dennis Mukaisi and Joseph Mbugi scored each and reduced Patrick Kwitonda’s goal to just a consolation. Nzoia have now hit three four matches in a row without a win after the loss. They last win came against Muhoroni Youth in May while Posta are now placed second on the log with 29 points.
Soldiers take over
Ulinzi Stars moved to the top of the standings thanks to goals from Sammy Onyango and Omar Mbongi. Despite Nakumatt FC putting up a good fight, Joshua Oyoo’s goal was not enough to earn them three points. Nakumatt will have to start off again after their winning run was halted by the Soldiers. They had won the last three league matches.
Zoo FC is placed four points above the relegation zone, Sammy Okoth charges shocked Millers Chemelil for 2-0 win in Kericho. It is their second top flight home win. The first win came on 20th May when they beat Bandari 3-2. Jairus Adira joined the list of players who were redcarded this weekend.
