midfielder Khalid Aucho scored the only goal at the Nyayo National Stadium to
see his team Uganda Cranes beat Sudan 1 - 0 in the final Group C match played
at the Nyayo National Stadium on Thursday 5 December.
In a game that both teams had already secured
quarter final slots, the two coaches had the comfort of resting their key
players with Sudan’s Mubarak Suliman resting top scorer Salah Ibrahim while
Uganda’s Milutin Sredejovic pulled out Dan Sserunkuma at half time.
A largely inactive first half saw Sudan miss the
best chance as Mohannad Tahir hit the side net with a free kick after Uganda
keeper Benjamin Ochan’s foul on Nadir el Tayeb while Sserunkuma had a long shot
sail over the bar in the 40th minute.
It however took Aucho a brave run forward to pick
Emmanuel Okwi’s pass and from about 20 yards shot home for the opener on 58 minutes.
Soon after, Okwi got an opening but his on target shot was punched by Abdelrahman
Ali before his defence came in to clear.
Tahir went close again with a free kick that
narrowly missed the target on 68 minutes and the Sudanese forwards went close
on two occasions in the 75th and 78th minutes but could
only find the side net.
Tahir had a final chance when he found space in the
85th minute but his shot was tipped over by Ochan for a corner that
bore no fruits as Uganda held their own to finish top of the group with nine
points off three games and will meet Tanzania in the quarters. Sudan, on the
other hand, will take on Ethiopia in the next stage of the competition.
