CAF Champions League; Kotoko, Zamalek mince the opposition

Egyptian powerhouse Zamalek and renowned Ghanaian side Asante Kotoko forced their opponents to sheer submission as the first leg preliminary rounds of the CAF Champions League concluded on Sunday 17 February 2013.  

Zamalek handed Chad’s Gazelle a 7-0 whitewash at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria. Three players each picked a brace; Gaafar (15, 45+3), Ibrahim (28, 83) and Cissé (76, 88) as Hassan added the other on 81 minutes. 

Uganda’s URA 

Asante Kotoko matched the same 7-0 score line after knocking down Equatorial Guinea’s Ela Nguema at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi. The seven goals came from seven different scorers; four of which came in the first half through Boakye, Aziz, Anaba and Helebege. Mpong, Bancey and Ochaya added the rest in the second half. 

Zimbabwe’s Power Dynamos, Nigeria’s Enugu Rangers and DR Congo's Vita Club picked up similar 3-0 wins over Lesotho Correctional Services, Sporting Clube do Príncipe from Sao Tome and Principe and Dynamic Togolais from Togo in that order. Tawanda Muparati (26), Boban Ziruntusa (61) and Patson Jaure (73) got the all important goals for Dynamos.  

Taddy Etakiama got a brace in the sixth and 21st minutes while Nzinga Luvumbu added the third for Vita Club

Home win 

Uganda’s URA will be a happy lot after managing to hold host Coton Sport of Cameroon to a 0-0 draw at the Roumdé Adjia Stadium, Garoua. Guinea’s Horoya also managed a similar 0-0 score with visiting Séwé Sports from Ivory Coast at the 28 Septembre Stadium in Conakry. 

While Coton Sport gave away a draw, another Cameroonian side Union Douala made sure of a 2-1 home win over Liberia’s LISCR at the Reunification Stadium in Doula. 

LISCR scored first, through Dominic Jarteh on 52 minutes but Doula rallied to win the game with goals from Vincent Mbarga Manga at the hour mark and a second from Dinnyuy Kongnyuy on 72 minutes. 

Mamadou Soro Nanga

Tanzania’s Simba SC kicked off their campaign on a wrong footing as the side went down 1-0 to visiting Recreativo do Libolo from Angola in a game played at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium. Joao Pedro Pinto Martins strike on 24 minutes was the difference in the game. 

Ivory Coast’s AFAD Djékanou hammered Sierra Leone’s Diamond Stars 5-1 at the Robert Champroux Stadium in Abidjan. Mamadou Soro Nanga was the toast for the Ivorian side as he netted all five goals. Diamond Stars got the consolation in the second half. 

Botswana’s representatives Mochudi Centre Chiefs scored very late, deep in injury time, through Jerome Ramatlhakwane to see off Mozambique’s Maxaquene at the Maxaquene in Maputo. 

Aggregate winners  

In another tie, ASPAC from Benin was held to a 1-1 draw at the l'Amitié in Cotonou by Burkina Faso’s ASFA Yennenga.Republic of Congo’s Leopards, the current CAF Confederations Cup Champions, kicked off their campaign with a 2-0 win over visiting CF Mounama from Gabon at the Denis Sassou Nguesso Stadium, Dolisie.

In total, 13 games were played on Sunday. 11 others had been played earlier; three on Friday 15 and eight on Saturday 16. 

The second leg games will be played on 1-3 March 2013 after which 24 aggregate winners of the 48 teams in the preliminary round will proceed to the first round.
