Young Africans (Yanga) FC from Tanzania are the 2012 CECAFA Kagame Cup Champions.
The team beat Azam FC 2-0 in the final match played on Saturday 28th July 2012 at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to retain the crown they won last year.
First half
Both teams struggled to gain possession in the beginning but it is Azam who threatened first, Kipre Tchetche collecting a good pass from deep in their half and making a good run only to shoot wide from 40 yards in the 13th minute.
Azam’s Erasto Nyoni shot over the three minutes later with a hard volley after a neat cross floated in from the left by Ramadhan Chombo.
Yanga settled as the progressed and seemed to be more dangerous on the attack. Ugandan Striker Hamis Kiiza forced Azam goalkeeper into a fine save with a wonderful volley from the edge of the box in the 27th minute.
Both teams continued to push forward in a bid to find the opener. Yanga’s Rashid Gumbo shot wide from 40 yards after being set up by Haruna Niyozima in the 40th minute.
Yanga opened the scores in the 44th minute, Hamis Kiiza beating Azam custodian Deogratius Munishi with a low drive just outside the box.
Second half
Azam introduced 2010 Kenyan Premier League Player of the Year George Blackberry Odhiambo at the beginning of the second half in a bid to strengthen their attack.
Hamis Kiiza, who was a thorn in Azam’s defence throughout the game, forced Munishi into a fine save with a low drive in the 51st minute.
Yanga enjoyed more ball possession as at the 54th minute, 57% against Azam’s 43%.
Azam made substitutions in the 68th minute, introducing Mrisho Ngasa for Kipre Tchetche and Kenyan defender Ibrahim Shikanda coming out for Samir Haji in the 70th minute.
Azam kept pushing forward but Yanga defence kept them at bay. Odhiambo shot wide in the 79th minute after being fed by Nyoni.
Yanga killed the game in the 93rd minute, Said Bahunuzi scoring with a wonderful volley after breaking from the midfield.
They have won the title five times now; 1975, 1993, 199, 2011 and this year.
