Ulinzi romp into Top 8 final

Ulinzi Stars
Ulinzi Stars have made it to their second KPL Top 8 final in a row after a 2-1 victory over SoNy Sugar in the second leg semi-final played at a rain soaked Nyayo National Stadium, Wednesday 8 August 2012.

Stephen Ocholla after 36 minutes and Anthony Nderitu three minutes later were on target for the Stars, with Ismael Dunga scoring the sugar millers consolation ten minutes from time.

The win means that Ulinzi go through to the showpiece event 3-2 on aggregate after holding their opponents to a 1-1 draw in the first leg ,match played last week.

The two goal win was well earned, but the scoreline masked a very good performance from a hardworking SoNy outfit.

Started strongly

Ulinzi started well, with Kevin Serenge played through on goal early, but he shot over the bar.

SoNy had their moments too, with Isiah Omondi being thwarted by Ulinzi keeper Jacktone Odhiambo.

Francis Ocholla would also waste a half chance, and they were made to pay a few minutes later.

Ulinzi scored their first on 36 minutes after a defensive blunder allowed the unmarked Ocholla to power home a shot from the edge of the box, sending keeper Wilson Oburu the wrong way.

The second came just three minutes later as Nderitu took advantage of yet another blunder.

Good shot home

This time round, Oburu's clearence fell right into the midfielder's path, and he made no mistake from 25 metres to make it 2-0.

SoNy were shell shocked, but they knew as they went into the half time break, that there was no one to blame but themselves.

And they would dominate the second half, as they charged off the blocks to try motion a way back into the match.

Agwanda would have the best chance, but his header from three yards out went agonisingly wide.

Then the rain came and the match had to be stopped for 15 minutes after the centre referee Anthony Ogwayo stopped the game with 72 minutes gone, as the rain pounded the stadium.

Dunga on the mark

When the game resumed, SoNy continued their huffing and puffing and were rewarded with ten minutes to go, as Dunga converted after Agwanda's shot hit the post.

However, it was too late, as Ulinzi hang on to make it to their second consecutive final, where they will face either Tusker FC or Gor Mahia who play each other in the second semi on Thursday 9 August.
