UJL, Impala win as Ligi Cup EA comes to a close

After three days of exciting football, the seventh edition of the Ligi Cup East Africa that brought together 82 teams from Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya has finally come to a close.

The games were played at the Ligi Ndogo grounds off Ngong Road and the adjacent Kilimani Primary, Impala and Harlequin grounds.

Hosts Ligi Ndogo and its Academy side made the finals in all categories except from the U20. But the teams had mixed fortunes winning only the U10 and U14 trophies.

Uganda Junior League (UJL) of Uganda won the U8 category after seeing off Ligi Ndogo in the finals.

Offloading most favored

The U10 category was won when hosts Ligi Ndogo who beat Uganda’s Machinde 6-5 in post match penalties after both teams tied 1-1 during normal time.

Future Zion from Kibera denied Ligi Academy the U12 trophy beating the team 1-0 in the finals.

Ghetto Light lost the U14 category going doing 5-4 on penalties after the team had forced a final 1-1 score. Little Rocks claimed the girls’ category after beating Kabete 2-1.

An organized Young talent Academy from Ngong came from behind to draw Ligi Ndogo U16 1-1 before snatching the Cup with a 5-4 win in the penalty shootouts in a pulsating final.

In the semis of the U20 category, Impala beat Intrepid 4-2 in penalties after both teams drew 0-0 in normal time. Liberty Professionals won the other semi after offloading most favored KJT of Uganda by a solitary goal.

The U20 title was claimed by Impala who beat Liberty Professionals by a single goal too nothing. But Liberty produced the MVP in this category; Anthony Mbugua, a Kenya U20 trialist.
