Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro Stars departed for Nairobi today to gun for only their third CECAFA title ahead of the event that kicks off this coming Saturday.
Tanzania who last won it in 1994 when it was last hosted in Kenya have a string of bad results in recent weeks that only a good show from the Group games in Mumias against Uganda, Burundi and Zanzibar then onwards to lifting the Cup can only erase.
Head Coach Marcio Maximo, a Brazilian, is under pressure to deliver better results than the two times he has led Kilimanjaro Stars in CEACAFA events.
As hosts in 2007, Tanzania was sent packing by Sudan in the quarters after a 2-1 loss but improved last year with a third place finish seeing off a resurgent Burundi 3-2 in the semis losers finals.
In the past three weeks, Tanzania lost two international games; 5-1 against Egypt on 5th November 09 and 2-1 against Yemen on 11th November 09. In between the team had drawn with the same Yemen 1-1.
Those particular results will push Tanzania for the 2009 Orange sponsored CECAFA crown.
Tanzania will kick off the title campaign on Sunday in the Western Province of Kenya, Mumias against defending Champions Uganda.
