Sunderland AFC Keroche rose from anonymity to become a regional force in the Naivasha/Gilgil region.
Though they lost their last match, played on 16 September, the team still booked an automatic promotion spot into the Central Rift County league.
Rewards
This achievement was well received by the team’s sponsors, in the United Kingdom, who have promised to present “Promotion Medals” to the players, when they visit the country in February 2013.
-We have already purchased the medals and we are just waiting for the awards ceremony in February, the club’s honorary president Gary Lamb told Futaa.com.
In addition to this, the club has organized a four-team tournament, to be played at the time the sponsors visit to mark the opening of the club’s new pitch.
Competition
The teams in the event have been selected from the Naivasha/Gilgil Distritct league, the league in which Sunderland were playing in the 2012 season.
-The tournament, dubbed the Kenya/English friendship cup, will take place on 16 and 17 February 2013 and will feature Sunderland, Kihoto FC, Motorbike Riders & Morendat FC, said Lamb.
-The competition is proudly sponsored by Northern freight services of Sunderland, England, who are also giving £50 each [approx. KSh6000] to the three invited teams.
Support
Sunderaland Keroche, largely sponsored by the fans of English Premier League side Sunderland AFC, have the Karai Primary School as their home ground.
The pitch has already been reseeded and other refurbishments are underway.
