South Africa's FA (SAFA), which had initially promised to appeal against their failure to qualify for the 2012 African Cup of nations, has aborted the mission and instead congratulated Niger for beating them out of the group stages. This is according to soccernet.espn.go.com.
Bafana Bafana missed out on the Cup of Nations when the settled for a barren draw with Sierra Leone, in a 1 October meeting.
It later emerged that they actually needed a win to qualify, even though they had a superior goal advantage.
Sporting Rules
South Africa, Niger and Sierra Leone all ended the qualification stage on nine points.
Configuration of African Football (CAF) rule 14.1 states that in the event of teams being deadlocked, their head-to-head records and not goal difference will decide who qualifies, and this is the criterion that saw Niger whiz past the dumb-founded South Africans.
Coach Pitso Mosimane, who has since accepted to shoulder the blame, will be retained as the teams head coach.
