Wyclife Ochomo's goal proved to be the decider as 2010 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Ulinzi beat Sofapaka on Sunday 16 September in Afraha Stadium, Nakuru.
Goal
The former Gor Mahia forward latched in a low shot from outside the box after being put through by Stephen Waruru to open the scores in the 25th minute.
Sofapaka showed intent early in the game, Kenya U20 forward Danson Kago hard shot missing the target narrowly in the 2nd minute. Dancun Ochieng nearly cost Sofapaka five minutes when his intended short pass to team captain James Situma was intercepted by Evans Amouko but he (Ochieng) was quick to parry the latter's hard drive for a corner.'
Both teams proved to be dangerous moving upfront and defended resolutely as the game progressed, half ending 1-0 in favour of Ulinzi.
Changes
Sofapaka, in an effort to salvage something from the game, subbed Danson Kago for Kenyan International striker Bob Mugalia and also rested former Gor Mahia midfielder Collins Gattuso Okoth bringing in Elly Asieche in the second half. Ulinzi Stars stars needed to defend the lead and introduced a defender for a forward, Geoffrey Kokoyo coming in for Stephen Waruru.
The changes had no effect in the match as it ended 1-0 in favour of Ulinzi. After the result, both teams now have 40 points having played 24 matches each. Sofapaka is fifth while Ulinzi is sixth in the 16-team Tusker Premier League table.
