Victor Anichebe

Nigerian forward quits international football

Everton’s Nigerian forward Victor Anichebe has announced his retirement from international football to concentrate on club football.

The announcement comes at a time when the Nigerian Football Federation  and the Super Eagles technical bench is preparing for the crucial second leg fixtures of the Brazil 2014 World Cup qualifiers in June.

Club football

-The best thing for me at the moment is to focus on club football, Anichebe was quoted as saying by BBC on Thursday 2 May.

-Without club football there is no international football and everyone at Everton was with me every step of the way during my injuries and rehabilitation and so I owe it to the club to manage myself correctly.

The player lashed out at the NFF for neglecting him during his lengthy injury spell at the Toffees.

-I didn't feel that the Nigerian federation was there for me then in the same manner, which was especially disappointing given that I got the injury representing my country.

-But I don't blame anyone for this nor do I have any issues with anybody from the NFF or Stephen Keshi our coach. He has done a fantastic job and is building a team that Nigerians can be proud of, he said.

Missed AFCON

Anichebe was not part of the African Cup of Nations winning squad in January 2013 in South Africa.

The Toffees striker switched allegiance and played his first game for Nigeria in March 2008 following his participation in the England youth level and scored on his debut in a 2-0 win over South Africa, helping them reach the 2008 Beijing Olympics  where they won silver.

His last appearance for the Super Eagles was in a 2-0 win over Madagascar in 2011.
