Despite ending fourth in the just ended Orange Senior Challenge Cup, Tanzania will return home having produced the tournaments highest scorer.
Yanga’s Mrisho Ngassa who at some point in the year had been rumored to have attended trials with English premier league side West Ham scored five goals – two in the group games against Burundi and Zanzibar and a hat-trick in the 4-0 thumping of Eritrea in the qualifiers to emerge as the sharpest of all.
Four
Rwanda’s Yusuf Ndayishime came in second with four goals – the lone goal in the group game against Eritrea, a brace against Zimbabwe in the quarters and the other in the semis against Tanzania.
James Chamanga who was forced to cut short his CECAFA adventure after just two group games agains Kenya and Ethiopia scored three goals – a brace that embarrassed Kenya in the opener and the third the lone goal against Ethiopia in the next game. Probably he could have gone for top honors had his chineses club not summoned him for preseason training. Another Chipolopolo player Kennedy Chola also came out with three - hat-trick in the 6-0 bashing of a lost Djibouti in Zambia’s final Group game.
Two
Allan Wanga emerged as Kenya’s highest scorer with two goals that he scored against Ethiopia and Djibouti in the Group games. the two added on to Wanga’s CECAFA tally topping up on his three during the 31st edition played in Tanzania in 2007.
Umed Ukuri of Ethiopia, Tumayine Ndamuhanga of Rwanda, Dan Wagaluka of Uganda and Charles Siyingwa of Zambia all finished on two.
George Odhiambo and John Baraza each had a goal in the competition alongside 20 other players.
Kenya’s top scorer in last years event Francis Ouma who then claimed four goals accounted for none of Kenya’s goals this time round leaving the scene blank.
Compared
Ngassa five matches the number scored by Bryan Omwony of Uganda last year. Abdelhamid Amari of Sudan top scored with six in the 2007 event.
