Mathare United skipper Anthony Modo Kimani headed in Lloyd Wahome’s freekick past KCB custodian Sammy Okinda with five minutes to stoppage time to ensure Mathare pick the maximum points in Tusker Premier League match played at the City Stadium on Saturday 27 October 2012.
First
Mathare United forwards Jesse Were and Francis Ouma missed clear chances in the early minutes of the match but the game soon settled with the team enjoying more possession than their opponents.
KCB’s Jacob Kelly headed wide after an inviting cross Edward Mwaura from the left in the 17th minute as KCB surged forward in such of an equalizer. Elvis Ayany received his firs booking few minutes later after a harsh tackle on Mathare United’s Athman Buki.
Both teams seemed cautious, occasionally trying to use counter attacks in such of the opening goal, Harambee Stars midfielder Mungai Kiongera was fouled by Mathare United’s Lloyd Wahome in the 34th minute just outside the box. He stepped up to take the resultant free kick which KCB custodian Sammy Okinda easily saved.
With three minutes to half time, Jesse Were missed another glorious chance, placing his low shot too wide, after being put through by Andrew Tololwa.
Second half
Both sides made changes in the second half; Mathare pulling out Francis Ouma and Joseph Mwangi for Kenneth Kimani and Daniel Mwaura while KCB brought in Daniel Waweru and Edwin Mwangi for Peter Wainaina and Edwin Mwangi respectively.
The changes had little effect in the game as both teams continued to be cautious, sitting back and occasionally pushing forward. Anthony Kimani scored the winning goal with five minutes to stoppage time, rising to head Lloyd Wahome’s freekick.
After the result, Mathare United is seventh with 38 points while KCB is eleventh with 33 points, both having played 28 matches.
