Malawi overturned a 3-2 loss at the hands of Chad on Wednesday 29 February 2012 after seeing off the same side 2-0 in the reverse tie played on Saturday 16 June 2012.
Joseph Kamwendo
Needing a single goal to go through, Malawi were safe at the break thanks to a 31st minute goal from John Banda that brought the aggregate score to 3-3 giving the Flames an advantage given the two goals the team scored away.
In the second half, Joseph Kamwendo added a second on 73rd minute to make it 2-0, a score that stood to the final whistle. Kamwendo's goal atoned for a first half penalty miss that could have seen the side 1-0 up by the 30th minute.
Following on Algeria
With a 4-3 aggregate, Malawi sails to the second and final round of the qualifiers that will be played on 7–9 September (first leg) and 12–14 October 2012 (second leg).
The Flames become the second team to sail from the first round qualifiers following Algeria who knocked off the Gambia 6-2 on aggregate after a 4-1 second leg win on Friday 15 June 2012.
