The Airtel Rising Stars Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association national games in Mombasa saw pre tournament favourites Kakamega High School dumped out of the competition at the semi final stage after a 0 – 1 loss to St. Anthony at the Shanzu Teachers College on Friday 10 August.
Gavoji miss
The match lived to its expectations with both sides threatening from the start in a well balanced game but the Western Province giants will live to regret the 87th minute miss by Michael Gavoji from Timothy Otieno’s cross when he was well placed.
The miss effectively took the tie to extra time which the combination of Meshack Karani and Godian Mukolwe for St. Anthony stood out while Kakamega had their share of impressive performers in Timothy Otieno, Mike Gavoji and Jacob Midega.
Karani winner
It was however, the Kitale based side’s combination that got the all important statistic; Meshack Karani played a beautiful exchange of passes with Godian Mukolwe but their progression was halted by a Kakamega High defender’s tackle that yielded a corner.
Mukolwe stepped forth to take the corner and picked Karani from the congested Green Commandos penalty area on 117 minutes. The Kenya U20 international rose highest to head home the winner. His celebration said it all as the ten time champions Kakamega High were left to reflect on another year of failed attempt at reclaiming lost glory.
St Anthony will now meet the winner between the defending champions Gekomoni and Upper Hill.
