Sony Sugar FC striker Hugo Nzangu was the only foreign player in the Kenyan Premier League that was awarded in the 2011 Footballer of the Year Awards in a gala held on Wednesday 7 December at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi.
Four runners up
The Congolese forward who was in good form for his club in the 2011 KPL season, was feted among the second best scorers, having managed 11 goals, in an award that was shared by three other players, Kevin Kimani, Mike Baraza and Clifford Alwanga.
Itubu Imbem’s concern
Lack of recognition to foreign players who grace the Kenyan Premier League has been subject of debate for some time now and even Tusker FC striker Itubu Imbem highlighted the issue as one that demoralizes the foreigners and could harm Kenya’s football in the long run.
Hugo had a troubled season in 2011, moving from Sofapaka to
AFC Leopards before finally getting a home at Awendo-based Sony Sugar FC.
