Gors Opiyo expected for CECAFA after Fortuna trials

Gor Mahia and Kenya midfielder Peter Opiyo Odhiambo is expected back in the country today after close to ten days trials at 2.Bundesliga side Fortuna Düsseldorf.

The former Thika United player and now a key member of Gor Mahia had two commanding 90 minute games for Kenya against Tunisia on 11th October and Nigeria on 14th November during the last two games of the 2010 World Cup and Nations Cup qualifiers.

Albeit being a surprise pick to many for being unknown, Opiyo had a commanding display in those two games to gain utmost respect from Kenyan fans.

"You could see right away that the boy can play very good football," praised Fortuna Düsseldorf Coach Norbert Meier on Tuesday about Peter Opiyo in a story carried in the Express.

There are however two problems. "The player has one and a half year contract in Kenya "said Norbert Meier.

The second difficulty: “Opiyo"s favorite position in the defensive midfield that Fortuna does not need to fill. The positions are currently taken up by Claus Costa and Stephan Sieger” continued the article on Express

Opiyo"s trial at Fortuna was necessitated by immediate former Kenyan Coach Antoine Hey, a German, who played at the club in the 1999/2000 season.
During the first week of July this year, Hey had also arranged a two week trial for Kenya"s central defender George Owino, 28, at the same club.

Owino was however not considered due to his contractual obligations with Yanga and instead Fortuna opted to sign out of contract Japanese defender Kozo Yuki.

After 13 rounds of play in the 2.Bunsdelliga, Fortuna is placed fourth with 23 points and seven off the leading team Kaiserslautern.

About Opiyo

As early as nine years old Opiyo featured for Thika side Makongeni Youth team before moving to Arberdare U17 team while aged only 12.

While at Makongeni, Opiyo together with Mike Luvutsi were signed up by Thika United in 1999 while still in Primary School.

In 2002 the two (plus Jackson Wachira) were put on a School fees program that saw their education through Chania High school fully covered from first to fourth form.

Since then Opiyo was a key member of Thika United"s Youth System and he eventually graduated to the senior team last season where he made 20 league appearances.

This year, Opiyo moved over to Gor Mahia on a two year deal that will see him at the club until 21st January 2011.

Opiyo is now expected to take up his holding midfield role with the Kenya team during the Orange Sponsored CECAFA senior Challenge Cup that begins tomorrow.
