Gor skipper highlights at peace tournament

Jerim

With the Tusker Premier League (TPL) over, the Gor Mahia captain and Kenyan international Jerim Onyango has been taking part in peace initiatives as the country prepares for the General Elections in March 2013.

Jerim, and Royal Media Services’ Joy Gwendo were the chief guests at the 5th edition of the Amani Kibera Peace Tournament whose theme was Ukabila ni Ujinga (Tribalism is Stupidity) which came to its conclusion on Friday 15 December.

133 participants

13 teams invited from all over the country and 120 others from Kibera, Nairobi took part in the tournament with the visiting teams being hosted for the entire duration by families in Kibera and in the end seven teams drawn from different age groups from either gender were feted.

In the girls’ games, Beijing Stars were 2 – 1 winners over Bethsaida in the U13 category, the same Beijing Stars were crowned winners in the U16 category with a 3 – 2 win over Sunderland FC. In the senior ladies’ category, Olympic beat Sunderland 2 – 1.

Boys’ category

On the other side, Mikadini thumped GYFF 3 – 2 in the boys’ U10 category while at the U13 category Corinthians were 1 – 0 winners over Ghetto Light as Lexus FC beat Shofco with the same margin in the U16 category. The Shofco seniors however, made up for the loss with a 1 – 0 win over TYSA.

Lessons

Kibera was one of the areas adversely affected by the 2007 – 08 post election violence that claimed over 1000 lives and left more than 600,000 Kenyans displaced, some of which are still living in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. A key reason for the violence was tribal intolerance among Kenyans.
