Gor Mahia’s Dan Sserenkuma scored with a volley in the twelfth minute of the game as the team beat reigning champions Tusker FC by a solitary goal in a Tusker Premier League match played at the City Stadium on Sunday 28 October 2012.
First half
Gor showed intent early in the game, Tusker’s David Ochieng stretching to intercept Anthony Akumu’s through pass to Moses Odhiambo at the edge of the box in the third minute of the match. Harambee Stars left-back Christopher Wekesa forced Tusker FC custodian Boniface Oluoch into a fine save a minute later with a dangling cross from the left.
With both teams trying to settle into the game, Tusker striker Joseph Emeka wasted a glorious chance to put his team ahead, heading wide with only Gor custodian to beat at the seventh minute. Gor Mahia’s Ali Abondo fouled Peter Opiyo just outside the box few minutes later but the latter’s freekick was easily picked by Jerim.
Ugandan import Dan Sserenkuma opened the scores in the 12th minute of the match, firing in a shot that seemed to trouble Boniface Oluoch in the Tusker goal as punched the ball towards his own net. The goal seemed to give Gor Mahia more confidence as they now enjoyed more possession.
Tusker’s Patrick Kagogo floated in a dangerous cross from the left in the 28th minute that Jerim Onyango parried away for a corner.
Both teams made substitutions; Tusker’s Joshua Oyoo coming in for the largely ineffective Joseph Emeka in the 34th minute while Gor brought it David Owino for former Nairobi City Stars defender Donald Mosoti in the 36th minute.
Tusker’s Jockins Atudo was booked in the 39th minute after a harsh tackle on Ugandan Dan Sserenkuma. Gor Mahia continued to enjoy more possession than the visitors, halftime ending 1-0 in their favour.
Second half
Tusker pulled out Patrick Kagogo for Joseph Mbugi on resumption and this seemed to work for them as they now kept the ball more and threatened on attack. Gor Mahia’s Christopher Wekesa was booked for using offensive language on the centrer-referee Nasur Doka in the 48th minute.
Ali Abondo made a good run on the right few minutes later and but his shot was easily picked by Boniface Oluoch. Tusker’s David Nyanzi came in for former AFC Leopards forward Dennis Mukaisi in the 57th minute but it is Gor who continued to enjoy more possession, 69% against Tusker’s 31 %.
Gor Introduced Kevin Ade Omondi for former Rangers FC man Joseph Njunguna and and later Moses Otieno for Ali Abondo with ten minutes to stoppage time. Harambee Stars midfielder Peter Opiyo long drive with five minutes to time was well saved by the hawk-eyed Jerim Onyango.
Five extra minutes were added but this had no effect on the game as it ended 1-0 in favour of Gor Mahia.
After the result, Gor Mahia has leapfrogged Tusker at the helm of the Tusker Premier League log with 55 points while Tusker is now second with 54 points, both having played 28 matches.
