Reigning Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) football champions Gekomoni High proved their prowess by stunning a determined Kisumu Day 2-1, on Saturday 14 July, to retain the Nyanza Provincial title.
The Rashid Omar-trained side made use of their set-pieces to edge out their opponents, at a fully packed Homa Bay High School Grounds.
David Aura executed a sterling free-kick in the 25th minute, to put Gekomoni on the lead before Victor Ali restored parity for Kisumu a few minutes to the break.
It was Peter Owuor’s 77th minute curved free-kick that secured a national ticket for the defending champions.
On their way to the final, the Kisii-based school beat Lambwe High School 6-5 via post match penalties as Kisumu Day trounced Gianchere High School 2-0.
In an interview with futaa.com, Gekomoni Coach Rashid Omar credited experience for the victory and said that they are now focused for the nationals.
-It was a tough match; each team came strongly against us but I am glad the boys followed instructions and at the end of the day we didn’t struggle to score.
-We are going to plan for build-up matches and strengthen our weak points before the national finals, revealed Omar.
Gekomoni will now represent Nyanza province for the second time in a row at the national finals to be held in Mombasa in August.
