Former Austrian superstar to set up academy in Kenya

Helmut Köglberger

In September 2013, former Austrian national team captain Helmut Köglberger and his son Stefan will be launching a football academy in the Korogocho slums.

The duo will be setting up the institution under the umbrella of the Hope for Future foundation, an organization that they have maintained close ties with for a long time.

Goals

According to Stefan, the academy will be targeting at the social and professional growth of children from the slum.

-We are looking at creating a social institution where talented children will spend time avoiding the temptation of getting into vices like drug abuse and crime. Secondly, we hope to help the players with superior talent get a chance in Europe, Stefan told Futaa.com.

Coaches

Stefan will be joined by one European and four Kenyan Coaches in guiding the four U10 and U12 boys’ and girls’ teams.

-We believe that this (U12) is the best age to identify and mould talent, said the older Köglberger.

Funding for the Academy will come from various companies in Austria, the Government of Upper Austria, friends of the Köglbergers and Caritas Kärnten, a Christian institution in Austria.

Superstar

Helmut was born in 1946, to an African-American father and white Austrian mother.

He was a star striker playing with clubs like LASK Linz, the oldest club from Upper Austria.  In the 1960s-70s he was popularly known as the "Black Pearl" of the Austrian football scene.

In his international career, he scored six goals in 28 played matches.

Coaching

After retirement, he moved into coaching, attaining a UEFA A license. He has coached a number of teams in Austria including SV Grießkirchen, LASK (youth coach), Voest Linz (youth coach), BNZ Linz (youth coach), Union Baumgartenberg DSG Union Perg, ASKOE Pregarten and his former team LASK Linz.
