Football Kenya Federation (FKF) recently appointed top-tier referees to take charge of two Division One matches scheduled to be played at the Coast over the weekend.
Nairobi-based Thomas Onyango will be the centre referee during the Saturday 6 October match between Bandari and Bidco at KPA Mbaraki Grounds while Isaac Ochieng will be the centre referee during the Sunday 7 October match between Sparki Youth and Bidco at the same venue.
The appointments did not go well with Coast referees who feel FKF should have given the duties to referees from the region.
-We have enough competent and credible referees in Coast and there is no justification whatsoever to bring referees all the way from Nairobi to officiate these games, said Ashraf Ali, a top Coast Referee.
Unlike the Tusker Premier League, Division one league is officiated by referees from the respective region that hosts the match.
Rejoinder
However FKF CEO Omondi Aduda says the decision to use top-tier referees was made by the FKF Executive Committee following the widespread complains about biased officiating in the second-tier.
-The decision to use top-tier referees was reached by the FKF Executive and therefore no one should talk of 'imported' referees. It was decided that from now on games involving the top four teams in both Div 1 A and B Zones will be officiated by top tier referees, Aduda told futaa.com.
-We are aware of all complains and cases of referees being compromised and we now want to stamp that out, he added.
Bandari tops the Division One Zone A table with 69 points from 39 matches while Kakamega Homeboyz is top in Zone B with 75 matches having played 32 matches.
