Former Chelsea midfielder now with Turkish giants Fenerbahce Raul Meireles has reportedly been handed an 11 match ban after spitting on a referee over the weekend.

Meireles allegedly spat on the official during their Sunday 16 December 2012 2-1 fall to opponents Galatasaray away.

Tougher penalty

According to soccernet.espn.go.com the Turkish Football Federation [TFF] upgraded the 29 year old’s punishment from the initial seven-match ban proposal after reviewing the evidence.

This means that the Portuguese international will be out of action until late March 2013 which will be a big blow to his side after the disgraceful action.

He has scored one goal in Turkey since his summer move from English giants Chelsea FC. Fenerbahce is placed second with 27 points, five behind arch rivals Galatasaray on the standings.
