Europa Lge: Newcastle bruise Club Brugge

Gabriel Obertan
Newcastle strengthened their hopes of reaching the first knockout round of the Europa League with a 1-0 win over Club Brugge.

The game was expected to be the first that Nigerian brothers, Shola and Sammy Ameobi will start together, but it was Sammy that got the nod for a starting place, while Shola came on for Vurnon Anita at the start of the second half.

Contribution
The younger Ameobi will make a major contribution to proceedings, when his final pass in a counter attacking sequence freed Gabriel Obertan to score the only goal of the game after 48 minutes, when he fired a fierce angled shot past Bruges keeper Bojan Jorgacevic.

Magpies striker Papiss Cisse twice went close, with a header and firm strike that were both well saved.

The result leaves Newcastle three points clear at the top of Group D.
