Considered a high scoring game, a 5-3 win for Sudan in the
first leg second round tie over Ethiopia on 8 September 2012 counted for
nothing as the team failed to capitalize on the high score to miss out on the
2013 Africa Cup of Nations.
Away goals rule
In a reverse tie played on Sunday 14 October 2012 from 1600hrs local time, host Ethiopia on the other hand made their three away goals to count as the team won 2-0 to tie the aggregate tie at 5-5.
With the away goals rule applicable, Ethiopia now sails through to the African showpiece that kicks off on 9 January 2013.
The only representatives from the CEACAFA
The goals that sent Sudan out and Ethiopia back to the Nations Cup were scored by Adane Girma netted the first a minute after the hour mark with the second coming two minutes later through Said Saladin.
The two; Ethiopia and Sudan were the only representatives from the CEACAFA Region to have made it to the second round of the qualifiers.
Ethiopia now joins Ghana, Mali, Nigeria, defending Champions Zambia, Tunisia and Morocco.
