2013 AFCON

Considered a high scoring game, a 5-3 win for Sudan in the first leg second round tie over Ethiopia on 8 September 2012 counted for nothing as the team failed to capitalize on the high score to miss out on the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

Away goals rule

In a reverse tie played on Sunday 14 October 2012 from 1600hrs local time, host Ethiopia on the other hand made their three away goals to count as the team won 2-0 to tie the aggregate tie at 5-5.

With the away goals rule applicable, Ethiopia now sails through to the African showpiece that kicks off on 9 January 2013.

The only representatives from the CEACAFA

The two; Ethiopia and Sudan were the only representatives from the CEACAFA Region to have made it to the second round of the qualifiers.
