Eagles courting Ameobi

Nigeria
Nigeria’s Super eagles have confirmed that they will call up Newcastle’s Shola Ameobi to beef up their 2013 Africa Cup of Nations squad heading to South Africa.

The Nigerian born player has expressed interest to represent his country of birth despite playing for the English Under-21s but has not featured for the Three Lions.

Switch nationalities

He [Ameobi] was also cleared by World Soccer Governing Body FIFA in November to switch nationalities.

Super Eagles’ Coach Stephen Keshi has confirmed that he is eager to persuade the 31 year old to be part of the squad to fight it out against other African countries.

- I've been watching him closely and he's got something unique. He will definitely bring something different to the attack.

- I have Shola and Victor Anichebe in my striking plans. I will give Obinna Nsofor, Obafemi Martins, Chinedu Obasi and others a chance to fight for a place alongside other strikers, he told BBC Sport.

Nigeria qualified for the continental event after a 6-1 routing of Liberia over the weekend to register an aggregate 8-3 win.
