Gor Mahia darling and marquee forward Daniel Mzee Sserunkuma was voted the 2013 Ugandan Footballer of the Year by the Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) on Monday 6 January 2014, Kawowo Sports reports.
The sports body chose the Gor Mahia FC forward ahead of Norway based midfielder Tony Mawejje, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) striker Siraje Muhindo.
The coveted award comes after the dread-locked striker’s trickery helped Kogalo claim the 2013 Kenya Premier League (KPL) gong after 18 years of waiting before exhibiting his prime instincts to as well lead the Green Army to the finals of the GOtv Shield.
The ex-Express FC striker notched eight league goals and five in the GOtv Shield to finish as the club’s top scorer for a second consecutive season.
The 2012 KPL player of the year was also nominated for the KPL Player of the Year but lost to new AFC Leopards’ striker Jacob Keli.
The former Nairobi City Stars man also played a crucial role in the national team as he engineered his Uganda Cranes to the quarter finals of the 2013 GOtv CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup held in Kenya.
In the two week tourney, Sserunkuma netted two goals and three assists in four matches the former champions played.
