With Gor Mahia and Tusker seriously preparing for continental duties in high anticipation of success in the CAF Confederations Cup and CAF Champions League tournaments respectively, one man who has already been there feels happy to miss out this time round.
James Situma, who has captained Sofapaka in the last two years on the continental scene, feels the tournaments weigh heavily on both the clubs’ management and players which gives him a consolation at missing out for the first time in three years.
Tiring
The Kenyan international, who made a return to the team after a short stay in Albania, admits the travelling and increased number of games is strenuous on the players because apart from tiring as a result of playing many games within a short time, it also increases the chances of getting injured.
He also says the tournaments’ successes are at a very advanced stage which means clubs have to spend a lot before starting to realize the fruits of the investment and a club could easily run into losses.
-The fact that we are out of Africa this time round is to some extent a good feeling because the tournaments have their negative sides as much as they are any player’s dream. On the players they impact heavily in terms of tiring after playing so many games and also travelling a lot. There is also the risk of getting injured.
Expensive
-The tournaments are also too expensive for clubs because
players have to be paid and the good money stages of the tournaments come in
advanced periods of the tournaments. If relegated early, the clubs mostly run
at a loss, he told futaa.com.
The defender however admitted if the opportunity to represent the country in Africa next season comes by he wouldn’t mind as he affirmed his desire to lead Sofapaka to silverware this season. He also wished the country’s representatives all the best in their continental engagements.
