English Premier League (EPL) champions Manchester City went to within a point of league leaders Chelsea after thumping Sunderland 3 – 0 in the league match played on Saturday 6 October at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester.
Kolarov opener
The champions lived to their billing as they went ahead after just four minutes courtesy of Serbian defender Aleksandar Kolarov. The defender stepped forth to take a free kick after a poor tackle by Carlos Cuellar on Carlos Tevez.
Kolarov chose Simon Mignolet’s near post and picked his spot well with a powerful effort that gave the home side the early lead.
Mignolet save
City should have doubled their advantage further on 20 minutes when Pablo Zabaleta picked a fortunate ball but Mignolet spread himself well to block the Argentine’s effort as the game drew to the break.
Danny Rose was at hand to spare Sunderland the blushes four minutes after the restart, clearing from the goal line a Micah Richards shot but the visitors could do little on the hour mark when Kolarov completed a fine run on the left with a perfect cross for Sergio Aguero to fire home on the near post.
Milner goal
Kolarov had a hand again as City registered their third of the afternoon. The Serbian defender’s run was checked, though unfairly, by Craig Gardner winning the defender a yellow card and City a free kick which James Milner fired home for the third goal.
The win effectively marked City’s first successive victories in the season after last week’s win over Fulham at the Craven Cottage and their first clean sheet too while for Sunderland it was their first defeat of the season.
