The Zambian national team, Chipolopolo has risen from third to top Group D of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers after winning an appeal against Sudan fielding an ineligible player in the two teams’ match on Sunday 2 June.
Sudan, the hosts, won the match 2 – 0 but the African champions were up in arms over the fielding of Saif Ali, who incidentally, scored the second goal of the match after 73 minutes.
Stripped of points
The world football governing body, FIFA's disciplinary committee ruled that Saif Ali should not have played after receiving yellow cards in previous competitive matches and so Sudan has been stripped of points and the country's Football Association fined US$6,430.
Zambia now top the group after being awarded three points in addition to their earlier won three after beating Ghana 1 – 0. They were also awarded three goals after the successful appeal.
