Kenyan international midfielder Victor Wanyama did not have the perfect UEFA Champions League Group stages opener, his Celtic side managed a barren draw at home to Benfica as he featured full time.
Comeback
The match was the only of the Wednesday 19 September matches that ended goalless as the other of the group’s matches; Barcelona at home to Spartak Moscow ended 3 – 2 in favour of Barcelona with the Spanish giants having to come from behind to win it.
Christian Tello opened the scoring for the Catalans but a Dani Alves own goal levelled matters before Romulo edged the Russians ahead. Lionel Messi, however, struck in the 72nd and 80th minute to spare Barca the blushes.
On Top
The match day 1 results mean Barcelona top the group with three points then Benfica and Celtic occupy the second and third places with a point each as the Russians trail with no point.
In Group H, Romanian outfit CFR Cluj FC registered a 2 – 0 win over Braga away in Portugal to go top after the opening day’s matches. Rafael Bastos scored both goals in the first half while Manchester United secured all the three points at Old Trafford courtesy of Michael Carrick’s first half goal against Turkish giants Galatasaray.
