Champions League: Chelsea, Man Utd, Barcelona pick away wins

Seven round of two 2012/3 Champions league games in Groups ‘E’ to ‘H’ kicked off on Tuesday 2 October 2012 across various venues from 2145 hrs.

Benfica went down

Of the seven, four sides picked up away wins while two hosts were winners. One host - Juventus was forced to a draw.

Of the home losers, Danish side Champions FC Nordsjalland was embarrassed 0-4 by Champions Chelsea who got goals from Juan Mata on 33 and 82 minutes and another two goals from defender David Luiz (79) and midfielder Ramires on 88 minutes.

Benfica went down 0-2 to Barcelona who scored through Alexis Sanchez on six minutes and Cesc Fabregas on 56 minutes.

Pantelis Kapetanos

Manchester United fell 1-0 behind to CFR Cluj from a Pantelis Kapetanos goal on 14 minutes but recovered with a brace from Robin Van Persie to win the tie 1-2. Van Persie’s goals came in the 29th and 49th minutes.

Braga was a 0-2 away winner over Greek side Galatasary thanks to goals from Ruben Micael in the 27th minute and a second from Alan at the death.

Valencia were home winners as the team saw off visiting French Ligue 1 side Lille 2-0. A brace from Jonas on 38 and 75 minutes did the damage.

Renan Bressan

2011/12 runners up Bayern Munich was surprised at BATE Borisov after going down 3-1 to the hosts.

BATE rushed to a 3-0 lead with goals from Aleksandr Pavlov on 23 minutes, a second from Vitali Rodionov and a third from Renan Bressan in the 78 and 90th minute followed. Frank Ribery however got a consolation for Bayern in injury time for a 3-1 final score line.

In a final game on the day, Juventus was held to a 1-1 draw by Russian side Shaktar Donetsk.

Maximum six points

A lead by Shaktar’s Alex Teixeira on 23 minutes was canceled out by Leonardo Bonucci's equalizer two minutes later for the two to settle for the only draw of the day.

With the latest results, Chelsea sits atop Group ‘E with four points ahead of Shaktar on goal difference.

BATE Borisov is top of Group ‘F’ with a maximum six points from two games ahead of Bayern Munich as Barcelona topples Victor Wanyama’s Celtic from the top of Group ‘G’.

Second place

In the only 1900hrs kick off of the day, Celtic made history with a first away win; 2-3 over host Spartak Moscow to temporarily go top of the Group with four points. Barcelona is now ahead with six points.

In Group ‘H’ , Manchester United is top with six points from two games with Cluj coming in second with three points.

Eight more games will be played on Wednesday 3 October in round two games for Groups ‘A’ to ‘D’.
