Black Stars' skipper surrenders armband

John Pantsil

John Pantsil has stepped down as Ghana's captain for the return leg AFCON qualifier match against Malawi set for this weekend.

Al Ain striker Asamoah Gyan will step in as the new captain after successfully leading the team past The Flames in the first leg encounter.

Victorious

Ghana won the match 2-0 and Gyan is expected to lead his colleague in a repeat of the show when they visit Malawi on Saturday 13th October 2012.

According to mtnfootball.com, Pantsil expressed confidence that the decision would act as a morale booster for the side as they face their opponents away.

- I spoke to the coach of my decision to relinquish the captaincy to Asamoah Gyan. I had been away from the team for some time and Asamoah (Gyan) captained the team to victory in the first leg game in Accra.

-So to continue to boost his morale and get a psychological edge over Malawi I think it is only proper that he captains the team for the return match, Pantsil told Angel FM.

Ghana has been camping in the country since Tuesday this week but jet off on Thursday 11th October 2012 headed to Lilongwe ahead of the match.
