Bafana skipper retires ahead of Kenya game

Steve

South Africa’s Bafana Bafana will miss the services of the team captain Steven Pienaar who has decided to bring his international career to an end ahead of the friendly match with the Kenyan national soccer team Harambee Stars.

16 October friendly

The South Africans are scheduled to take on Kenya on Tuesday 16 October at the Nyayo National Stadium but Pienaar, whose last international goal was against Kenya in a friendly in Johannesburg in 2011 has informed the coach Gordon Igesund of his decision to quit international football.

Pienaar, who turns out for English Premier League outfit Everton, cited pressures in English football as the key reason that has made him quit and understandably so since he has featured for only seven matches since the World Cup two years ago.

He is yet to play for the national team under new coach Gordon Igesund. He made his debut in 2002, when aged 20, against Turkey and has gone on to feature 62 times for his country.
