Former Sofapaka coach Salim Ali, who was given his marching orders on Tuesday 21 August following a string of unimpressive results has defended his team selection during his time with the former Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions.

Bad run

The former Mathare United tactician managed one win, three draws and two losses in the six matches the team has played so far in the second leg and the club’s president Elly Kalekwa had had enough of it after the barren draw with Nairobi City Stars on Saturday 18 August.

Salim, however, says his team selection was not a contributor to his fate as he affirms that the players he used in the second leg are the very ones that propelled the team to the league summit at the close of the first leg.

Fielding a non issue

-Maybe the team should go back to the drawing board, I don’t think the fielding was an issue; in the first leg we finished top with these very players so it should not be an issue now after six matches in the second leg, he told futaa.com.

In his parting shot, he said he has always harboured a winning mentality and thanked Sofapaka for the eight months he has been in charge of the team.

Wanted the best

-Any coach trains a team with an ambition to win and I am no exception. I wanted the best for Sofapaka and I am happy for the eight months they gave me. It also gave me the opportunity to meet different players of varying nationalities and I wish the team all the best, he said.
