On form Kenyan international Enock Agwanda was an outstanding performer as SoNy Sugar thrashed Thika United 3- 0 in the Tusker Premieer League (TPL) match played at the Awendo Green Stadium on Sunday 23 September.
Dunga opener
Ismail Dunga got the home side’s opener early in the game off a long and powerful throw by Enock Agwanda in the 13th minute, heading well to give Lucas Indeche no chance at all. The keeper spared Thika United another concession five minutes later when he parried a powerful Enock Agwanda shot.
He however, needed to be attended to by the medical team after the save and he was on his feet shortly after to see Thika United pile pressure on the home side in search of an equalizer which should have come on 22 minutes as Moses Arita shot narrowly wide when well placed.
Half time lead
SoNy Sugar managed to hold on to the slim lead as they went to the break courtesy of some fine defending by Sylvester Wanyama and the experienced former Sofapaka defender Kilonzi Tumba.
Thika United made an offensive change in the second half, introducing Haji Mwachoki in place of John Nairuka and the pressure instilled almost yielded the equaliser in the 67th minute through the hardworking Francis Kahata.
The Kenyan international latched on to a poor goal kick by SoNy Sugar goalie Collins Oduor to release a delightful long shot that bounced off the post, leaving the keeper down injured as he tried to make amends for the earlier mistake.
Ocholla goal
SoNy Sugar coach Zedekiah Otieno then introduced John Kiplagat for the fading Ismael Dunga on 77 minutes and three minutes later the home side doubled the scores. The burly Enock Agwanda picked a harmless pass on the left flank and crossed well to Francis Ocholla whose well timed shot flew past a hapless Indeche for the second goal.
The third didn’t take long as Thika United, seemingly jaded, lost possession to Agwanda, this time on the right channel, to float in a cross and a calm John Kiplagat fired the third goal on 86 minutes, his first in SoNy Sugar colours.
The win takes SoNy Sugar to ninth place with 31 points after 25 matches while Thika United, on 42 points, drop to fifth place following the 2 – 0 win by Ulinzi Stars over Oserian earlier in Naivasha.
