2014 WC qualifiers; Russia, the Dutch keep it 100%

On Tuesday 16 October 2012, several round four games were played in Europe towards 2014 World Cup qualification.

Maximum 12 points

In an 1800hrs local time kick off, Russia kept it a clean four wins in four games after seeing off Azerbaijan 1-0 in a game played at the Olimpiyskiy Kompleks Luzhniki Stadium.

The win, thanks to an 84th minute penalty by Roman Shirokov kept the side top of Group ‘F’ with a maximum 12 points.

The Netherlands too made it four straight wins after picking up an impressive 1-4 away win in Romania in a Group ‘D’ tie.

Robin Van Persie sealed

A goal from Jeremain Lens on minutes and a second from Bruno Martins Indi 20 minutes later gave the Dutch an early 0-2 lead.

Romania was to head to the break with trailing the game 1-3 after Ciprian Marica scored for the hosts on 41 minutes with and Netherlands a third on 44 minutes – a penalty from Rafael van der Vaart. Robin Van Persie sealed the deal with an 86th minute win.

Stroke of half time

In Group ‘B’, Italy opened a four point gap over second placed Bulgaria with after picking a 3-1 win over Denmark.

Two quick goals from Riccardo Montolivo on 33 minutes and Daniele De Rossi four minutes later gave the hosts a 2-0 lead. But Denmark got one at the stroke of half time through William Kvist.

Ten point mark

In the second half, Italy added a third, through Mario Baloteli on 54 minutes to run away with the game to hit the ten point mark.

In other selected results, high scoring Ireland got a 1-4 away win over host Faroe Islands in a Group ‘C’ clash as Israel completed a double over Luxembourg winning a Group ‘F’ tie 3-0.
