Blog: To KPL clubs: Yes.. Patience pays

I have wondered for quite some time now...will we ever have an Arsene Wenger, David Moyes or Sir Alex Ferguson in Kenya?

Will the local leagues ever have such people? It would mean a lot for that club that will be able to pull such a move and I can bet that it will be extra-ordinarily successful. Most importantly, the players will feel very safe and happy in that club... that, I am sure of, so will the fans who anyway are the people whose feelings should be considered first.

When I talk of the above coaches, I'm not reffering to their coaching abilities, but rather the patience the club management has had with them.

Truth is, patience is not a virtue that Kenyan club management has been blessed with. Leaving the fans out of this, the management wants to win all the games.

Lose four games in a row or draw and the coach is gone and the contract over and done with.

Not always the coach's fault

What would happen if a club had patience with the coach? I mean its not always that the coach is to blame, but still they are blamed.

Yes, they do deserve to be in the firing line in some circumstances, but you will agree with me, not always. More importantly sometimes its just nature. A time comes when one plus one does not add up. Luck just turns its back on you.

True some coaches fail to deliver on their own, with poor team selection, failure to 'coach well' and so on, the main problem.

Some though, who have fallen victim of the thirsty vampire also known as club impatience, can simply be described as being unlucky. Sometimes you look at how how the selection is done and you agree with the coach.

However, results will not necessarily concur. Sometimes, the truth is that players let the coach and the club down and are usually let off for it.

The players also do have that 'an off' day, moment or time. At other times, the management fails to support the coach by not buying at least a few of the players the coach wants.

To club chairmen

Truth is any time you play, three results are expected and any of the three can befall anyone. A win is not always guaranteed. A draw is
also a result and so is a loss. Even the greatest of clubs do get the three results, sometimes in very un-expected circumstances. Those games when a win is expected, but a loss makes its way to the team rather than the expected win.

I would like to see the day come when the club management will exercise patience with the coach. Before parting ways they be sure its the coach who is not delivering. I know if I asked now, many fans can point certain players whom they feel has cost their club points. Some fans also would point the managements part in the clubs below per performance. But still the coach gets stick for it.

Dear management, ever heard of the saying patience pays? They say you never miss the waters till the wells run dry. Some have already started missing the water. Others will.

Before making that move, think how above all else fair and correct it is. Do a SWOT analysis if you can to avoid regretting your decision made in haste or otherwise.
