Blog: This version of Man United is unconvincing

Robin van Persie
Before the season started, I argued with some fellow fans about how good the Manchester United squad of the 2011-12 season was.

I for one thought that we had a poor team from last season and needed a few new faces to lift us.

A play-maker was chief for me, a striker and a defender for sure.

In the end, we did buy those players, but I was not happy at all.

Why? the quality of the players bought was just not good enough.

Never doubt Sir Alex

Some friends argued that as long as it is Sir Alex in charge, we are in a good place and everything is fine.

I agreed, but to an extent I had my doubts.

In Robin Van Persie, we had a world class striker, in Nick Powell, Shinji Kagawa and the others.. Average players.

What was even more worrying was the re- signing of Paul Scholes for another season.

It meant that Ferguson had admitted that he was not going to buy anyone special in midfield, where we really needed someone to come in.

Poor start

The start to the new season has been shaky.

We have not looked good enough in defence and upfront, you get the feeling that we are depending too much on Van Persie and Wayne Rooney.

The loss at Everton was not any different from the wins against Wigan and Southampton, we looked just as bad all through.

We have just not been convincing enough and in my opinion, if we got a real test, we would struggle.

That was confirmed by Tottenham Hotspur.

Not good enough

Spurs beat us 3-2 at Old Trafford and in honesty, they deserved nothing less.

They made us look bad, especially at the back... A defence of Rafael, Rio Ferdinand, Johnny Evans and Patrice Evra is just not good enough.

In midfield, apart from the time Rooney came in, we were outplayed.

We were exposed by a team that was better in many departments and we were second best for long periods.

It is worrying.

Worst yet

I fear that this season could be our worst yet...

There are no signs that we can do anything special or lift the roof off any stadium with our displays, we have been very poor so far.

Just that we have Sir Alex, otherwise, I would have given up by now.
