Blog: Thika Municipal Stadium: Fail Fail Fail!

As a football fan, variety is interesting, very appealing, hard to turn away from.

In Kenyan football preferences, I am a Tusker FC fan, and my substitute love is Naivasha's Oserian. So, with Tusker away, representing Kenya in the on going Kagame Cup in Tanzania, I decided to humour my second love.

So last weekend, I went to Thika town to watch the other love Oserian, play Thika United.

The match venue was the Thika Municipal Stadium, of which I have a couple of things to say about.

Too many wrongs

On the positive, the stadium is magnificently situated. Its location is convenient both for fans with personal means and public service vehicle users. But it ends there, that is all I loved about the stadium.

The management seems not to be in the business of making money or making the fans comfortable, which is odd.

The stadium washrooms are a total mess and a miss. There are 'normal' washrooms which stink and their placing is all wrong. There are VIP wash-rooms which are closed and not in use. This begs the question, what's their use?.

With my little business knowledge, I can say the VIP washrooms can easily earn the stadia money, as if they are maintained with a high level of cleanliness, the stadia management can charge fans who visit the rooms. You know... pull a 'Iko Toilet'.

That is one area where the Stadium is a FAIL for me.

No sitting area

Second fail is that despite there being VIP wash-rooms, there is no VIP sitting area. They are all classed as terraces.

So I wondered, are they promoting equality of all? I don't know.

The seating space in the 'Main Stand' (if I may call it so) is minimal to say the least.

Others are left standing while surrounding the playing field or sitting on the vehicles parked around the playing field.

I sincerely don't know what it is they hope to achieve with this, so I take it as a FAIL.

Unfriendly

Knowing how the stadium is built, I think the home team should do better than they do on match days, especially when I was there.

To make the game more entertaining, they should have a stadium announcer or commentator. I mean, ever watched a game on mute mode? It is not interesting.

Seated where I was, seeing who the scorers were was no easy task. Knowing who had been substituted was impossible, a commentator would have done wonders.

That is another Fail for me.

Playing ground...

For obvious reasons, I will stay mum on the condition of the playing field. What can I say that hasnt been said?
