Blog: They did it for pride, lets give them a chance

It is a moment of pride for every sports person when he or she represents their nation in any sports discipline.

The exclusion of David Beckham from the Great Britain`s football team which is taking part in the current Olympic Gems in London is such an example of how much pride, sports personalities in other countries have.

The Olympics do not pay as much as what Beckham earns in Major League Soccer but still does not stop him from wanting to be in the team.

Let`s come to the Kenyan scenario whereby players don the national team colours, a pride for many, but when in the field of play, perennially produce lucklustre performances.

After they play poorly, they usually quickly come to their own defences as regards their performances, blaming the federation or little time for training for their failure.

Played with pride

I disagree..

As we saw, the national U23 development side needed only three days to train and gel, with little motivation (allowances) and still managed to perform well against a strong Botswana outfit.

It has been a tradition in the past where the national team pitches camp for over a month for a CAN or world cup qualifiers, but this time, the U23 captain was quoted after the international friendly as saying that their victory was down to pride and patriotism.

What the captain might have failed to mention is that the national team presents a perfect stage to be noticed by scouts, and if lucky, a chance to play professional football abroad beckons. The show by the U23 has been rewarded with an opportunity to represent the country in the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup to be held later in the year, exposure or what?

Over to you FKF

With this hunger for success, the senior national team should be disbanded and this development side adopted. Lest you forget this is the same team that drew with Guinea and were narrowly beaten by Senegal, who were boasting world class players earlier in the year.

As they wait for CECAFA, the federation should do them justice, by offering them friendly matches to give them more experience as they await the big stage.

After all is said and done, this not to advocate for none payment of players allowances in pretext of a country`s pride; the federation should pay players what they are worth and at the same time players should show their worth for it .
