Blog: Team Neutral: A Gor-AFC draw will do

The derby, talked about hugely, waited for anxiously, finally is here. We can smell its perfume from just around the corner. Saturday 22 September 2012 is the day.

Some months back when AFC Leopards were at their greatest form, Gor were languishing somewhere at the bottom of the Tusker Premier League standings. Enter the Croatian and things took an about-turn. Now, with the derby approaching, only two points separate them. Both are title contenders.

While Gor made a positive about turn, AFC's form has dipped. From being nine points plus ahead of Gor to the current two, it points to the fact that all is not well at the den. When Saturday comes, I d not know know if either team will underestimate their opponents or not, but all I know is that this will be a do or die for the two. Not just for the title but also for Pride. They need to get bragging rights. Both want victory. Nothing less.

That is them. As a football fan who does not support either Gor or AFC Leopards, I want a draw. To make the title race more entertaining as it nears its end. Whether a Tusker FC, Thika United, Sofapaka or Ulinzi Stars fan (the other top six members who if they play their cards well and for some lady luck smiles their way, can win the league) a draw will be the most favourable and fairest of results.

Tight at the top

It will mean AFC top the league with just two points separating first from third (till Tusker plays). A win for any of them will mean headaches for the loser of the derby and for Tusker.

And then again, fresh calculations will start.

I speak not just as a Tusker fan but also as a football fan. A fan who wants to see teams give their all during the last matches. A fan who
wants to see the winner crowned having offered their best. Tooth and nail. A fan who would not mind a better repeat of last season, where if Tusker had drawn their last match, Ulinzi would have won the title. Now I want to see that as early as the 26th round/game. Where if a team draws, it can go back as far as four positions.

I even would not mind, on the final day, at least three teams be title contenders. Even for the league to be won on goal difference. That ius then, for now though, a draw will do for me and all other fans who are not pro- either Gor or AFC.
