I have been an ardent fan of the Kenyan Premier League for many years, to be exact, since my childhood, when teams such as Kenya Breweries used to make the watching crowd at the Moi International Sports Centre go crazy. For those who are of the digital generation, Kenya Breweries is the newly rebranded Tusker FC.
Though I was young, following all the proceedings through my father’s Sanyo Radio was amazing.
To many from the golden days, Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards were the real giants. I can remember well, the time when Gor clinched the KPL title with 101 points followed by Breweries with 99.
I will not dwell much on the past and concentrate on what has brought me here; to unleash my unpleasant dossier to all the proclaimers of glory for Gor and AFC Leopards.
The bitter Truth!
Different styles
The two teams are similar in that they have a large following, traversing all regions of Kenya. However, they are different in a key way.. PLAYING STYLE!!!
Gor play their football like Barcelona but finish like Arsenal, while AFC Leopards play like Chelsea and finish like QPR.
The two teams lack horribly when it comes to finishing power and that has been their undoing over the years.
This year is no different.
The Consistency that is expected from a team that is crunching to win silverware after missing out for more than a decade, has not been manifested by these two teams, despite their great showing in the recent past.
Many analysts have given a preliminary predication of AFC lifting the trophy, but with the style of football they are showcasing, they will be left scanning the codes of other sides.
Too late
Just like a soldier who is planning to ambush an enemy, Gor have come too late and AFC have no guts to face the enemy, and that why and when the un-fancied Ulinzi Stars will capitalize on their weakness.
As I do say, I am Tusker fan who adores the team very much but on this I want to agree with Chinua Achebe in his book; If you can’t beat them join them.
Watch the space as chaff and puff are being separated.
