Saturday 15 September 2012 could have been the day AFC Leopards, 12 time Kenyan champions would be celebrating a five point lead at the helm of the Tusker Premier League and a positive step towards the crown.

However, Wesley Kemboi's brace allowed Western Stima to grab a deserved 2-1 win over Leopards and help reigning champions Tusker FC go top of the league and give Gor wuod Ogada Nyakwar Ogallo a chance to capture the title.

On Saturday 22 September at 1500 hrs, will be a day and time that pundits and managers have earmarked and kept ready. Even the wily man from Ndhiwa, South Nyanza or the Boda Boda cyclist from Bungoma, acknowledge that one way or the other, points will be dropped and it would always boil down to this.

AFC Leopards were at one stage top of league by a long way. They had to grind out match after match to help themselves get an eight point lead, which has now reduced to zero, as they are second on goal difference.

Simple equation

For Leopards, the TPL has now reached a stage where the equation becomes frighteningly simple.

A win at Kasarani for Ingwe will certainly guarantee them a record breaking 13th title, while a loss on the contrary to bitter rivals Gor would put the Green Army in pole position.

Like former South African player Mark Fish said, the Nairobi derby is third only to the Soweto and Cairo derbies, but according to me, it is far greater than that as television viewership is reported to be grand around the continent.

The power in Kasarani come Saturday hangs delicately in balance. The TPL is well known to be a marathon and not a sprint, but this is the most important phase of it all. Who will prevail? Will Leopards get back to winning ways or will Gor show them whose boss?

Either way, Leopards will have only themselves to blame if they lose the title, considering the big lead they had.

Kazi kwenu Ingwe.
